Residential Insulation FAQs
GENERAL INSULATION QUESTIONS
-
Unfortunately we don't have the resources to remove insulation at this time. Ballarat Vac & Pumping Solutions are who we refer people to, and they do a great job.
Once they’re finished, we can come in and install the new insulation for you.
-
Yes, we travel! Anywhere roughly outside an hour from Warrnambool will incur an additional travel fee, but we’re happy to travel 2-2.5 hours to supply your home. This covers the South West of Victoria, and Mt Gambier.
-
Most residential roof jobs take between half a day to two days, depending on the size of your home and the areas being insulated. Underfloor insulation takes much longer — where a roof may take a single day, the same size underfloor may take three.
-
Pricing depends on the area covered and the type of insulation used, but we offer competitive local rates and free quotes. Good insulation typically pays for itself within a few years through lower heating and cooling costs.
-
We work carefully to keep your home clean and tidy. For roof and underfloor insulation, most of the work happens in areas you rarely see, and we always clean up before we leave.
-
R Value measures the insulation’s resistance to heat flow/transfer. The higher the R value, the higher the protection against winter’s cold and summer’s sun, but also the more expensive the insulation becomes.
At Warrnambool Insulation, we work with the following R values:
Roof: R4.0-R7.0
Walls: R2.5-R2.7
Underfloor: R2.5 underfloor-specific batts -
We’re happy to organise the supply and delivery of the insulation for your job, or we’re just as happy to work with the insulation you provide, and can easily give separate quotes so you can weigh the options.
Our insulation is purchased through our local partners at Warrnambool Gyprock, or through Bunnings Trade, depending on the type needed for the job.
-
We work with Glasswool and Earthwool fibre batts, which provide excellent thermal and acoustic performance.
ROOF INSULATION QUESTIONS
-
Yes — as long as the old insulation is dry, clean, and undamaged, we can often install new insulation over the top to improve your home’s R-value. If it’s mouldy, pest-damaged, or damp, we’ll recommend removal before replacing it.
-
Over 30% of the heating or cooling in a home can be lost through an un-insulated, or poorly insulated cieling. Insulating the roof is an easy way to create a more comfortable home while saving money on heating and cooling bills.
-
We much prefer going through the top of the roof instead of through an access point in your house! This gives us more space to work, and stops any dust or dirt from entering your living areas. It also means we can install the insulation even when you’re not home if you prefer.
Normal tile or tin gives us easy access, but if the roof has asbestos sheets, slate, or cliplock tin, we’ll will potentially need to go through the manhole.
UNDERFLOOR INSULATION QUESTIONS
-
As long as 500mm between the ground and the bottom of the bearers (what the joists sit on), we should be good to go. If it’s going to be a tight squeeze it may be best to send a picture of the access point with a measuring tape, or we’ll come out and take a look just in case.
-
An un-insulated underfloor can lose up to 20% of your home's internal heating or cooling. If you have a suspended timber floor without insulation, your flooring is the only thing between you and the elements.
-
Ideally the space between the joists of your floor is a standard distance (415/420/565mm), in which case the extra resin in underfloor insulation helps it to hold firm once it expands and no extra fixings are needed.
Rarely we’ll find a house where the insulation doesn’t hold itself up, and in that case we use sisalation or stringing tape to hold it in place.
-
Most joists under a house are 90mm high, which R2.5 underfloor is made specifically to fit. Underfloor insulation also has the benefit of extra resin so the batts hold themselves in place.
If you have joists that are higher than 90mm and want thicker insulation, give us a call and we’ll see what can be done!
WALL INSULATION QUESTIONS
-
Only when one side of the wall has been removed! Otherwise, we won’t be able to access the space. For existing homes, we can only install wall insulation during renovations or extensions.
